Women of Influence 2014: OTRADI’s Jennifer Fox on the power of good people
April 22, 2014 –by Andy Giegerich Digital Managing Editor- Portland Business Journal

Who’s getting excited about our Women of Influence awards? Turns out, more than 500 people are, so far. Registration is off the charts for the event, which takes place Thursday. Which means it’s a good time to get tickets for the event, at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Portland. In the meantime, you can meet some of our honorees in this and other stories we’re running in advance of the event.

One of our winners is Jennifer Fox. When she’s not drumming for real (Fox is a skilled percussionist), she’s drumming up support for the Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI) and OTRADI Bioscience Incubator (OBI). Here’s a bit more about Fox.
How have you gone about raising OTRADI’s profile? “We have worked with a public relations agency, The WWW Group, for more than two years now to build awareness about what we do and why it is important. We’ve raised our profile through traditional and contemporary PR and marketing methods, including media relations, events and presentations, and ally development with medical companies, local businesses and philanthropic entities. We also improved our outward image by creating a new website and undergoing an aesthetic rebranding.
Moving forward, we’re launching our first capital campaign in 2014. The campaign will not just be for expanding the physical space or adding equipment; it will also support our new BioMentoring program.
For example, in order to help our early-stage companies, I would like to hire an Entrepreneur-in-Residence, who would provide companies with funding and business counsel.

Our profile will continue to grow in 2014 as we develop our BioMentoring program for bioscience companies currently in the state of Oregon and for others who are considering locating here.
In addition to the OTRADI Board of Directors, we have also set up an OBI Advisory Board with individuals who have extensive experience in business and science. They help with strategic direction and planning, financial planning, and mentoring. With their assistance, we have moved ahead quickly. I cannot thank them all enough for their wisdom and guidance.”
How would you describe your management style? “OTRADI is run much like a startup, with a small, but wickedly capable staff and a large network of collaborations and partnerships. We are a company made up of scientists and other professionals, but I, and every member of my team, is always willing to take on new tasks, from washing the dishes to counseling a company through challenging times.
Basically, I surround myself with people who are extremely capable, positive, and up to a challenge. I have confidence in my team, so I respectfully listen to their ideas and give them the freedom to take ownership of their projects. I am a believer in respect and teamwork. Together, we make things happen because we believe in what we’re doing and respect what each person brings to the team.”
